Green Presidential Candidate Jill Stein, Arrested for Pipeline Protest in 2012, Congratulates Activists on Keystone XL Victory

Calls For Immediate Halt In New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure, & 100% Clean Renewable Energy by 2030

Dr. Jill Stein, candidate for the Green Party’s 2016 Presidential nomination and the party’s 2012 nominee, released the following statement congratulating climate justice activists on the final rejection of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline:

“Congratulations to all the climate justice activists who stood up to the fossil fuel industry and Wall Street and forced the President to reject the Keystone XL Pipeline.  Now is the time to intensify our fight to reverse all the policies leading toward climate disaster. We need to tell the Administration that they must commit to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030, stop supporting the expansion of fracked gas pipelines and export terminals, stop expanding the pillage of public lands and coastlines for fossil fuels, and stop blocking the international climate treaty needed to save our climate,” said Dr. Jill Stein, who as the Green Party presidential candidate in 2012 was arrested while delivering food to pipeline protesters.

Stein added, “It’s also time to update our climate goals to conform with recent science that argues a cap on global temperature rise should be lowered from 2 degrees to 1.5 degrees Celsius. And we must uphold the commitments made at COP for developed nations to provide major financial assistance to undeveloped countries to assist them in dealing with the climate change that developed countries are responsible for.”
